PURCHASE, N.Y. — With both teams fighting for position in their conference standings, the Manhattanville College men's and women's tennis teams completed a sweep of Misericordia tennis Saturday, April 13 at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play.
On the men's side, junior
Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)) came away with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory in first singles. In second singles action, sophomore
Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) was victorious by the same score. Freshman
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover)Â won the first set in third singles 6-1, and was then awarded the victory due to a Misericordia injury. In fourth singles, freshman
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had a flawless score as well, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win. Sophomore
Maguire Balke (Yardville, N.J./Steinert)Â had a strong day on the court, winning a 6-2, 6-0 decision in fifth singles, and freshman
Jaime Peredo (Uruapan, México/Instituto Morelos) finished off singles action for the Valiants with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Huertas and Senkerik were equally impressive in first doubles play, picking up an 8-1 win. Freshmen
Alvaro de la Plaza (Malaga, Spain/Homeschooled (Laurel Springs, Calif.)) and
Dylan Mund (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood Regional) continued the strong play for the Valiants with an 8-2 victory in second doubles, and junior
Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) and Schlapak had a perfect third doubles match with an 8-0 win, giving the Valiants a 9-0 win over the Cougars and improving the team to 3-1 in conference play.
For the women, freshman
Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and senior
Lizza Gonzalez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/The Ashton School) picked up an 8-0 win in first doubles. In second doubles, junior
Izzy Lovejoy (Madison, Conn./Forman School) and senior
Cassie Williamson (White Plains, N.Y./The Ursuline School) dropped an 8-3 decision, followed by sophomore
Sunny Tonnesen (Oslo, Norway/EF Academy) and senior
Stephanie Stumm (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) falling in third doubles by the same score.
Charley picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in first singles action, getting Manhattanville even at 2-2. In second singles, Gonzalez came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by Lovejoy winning a 6-4, 6-4 decision. Freshman
Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) then suffered a 0-6, 1-6 loss in fourth singles, and Stumm fell 4-6, 4-6 in sixth singles to tie the score at 4-4. The fifth singles match was the deciding match of the day, and Tonnesen was able to pick up a three-set, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory to win the match and give the Valiants a 5-4 victory and give them a 2-1 MAC Freedom record on the season.
The men's team is back in action Sunday, April 14, when they travel to Bronxville, N.Y. to take on Sarah Lawrence College at 1:00 p.m., while the women return to the court Wednesday, April 17 when they continue MAC Freedom play at Delaware Valley University, with matches getting underway at 2:30 p.m.
