Baseball Drops MAC Freedom Series Finale to Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, PA – The Manhattanville College baseball team dropped the long-delayed finale of its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom finale with the Eastern University Eagles, 7-6, Sunday April 14 from The Yard.

After the two teams split a doubleheader at Manhattanville Field four weeks ago, Manhattanville (15-13, 9-6) dropped the rubber game of the series, despite three hits and two runs from senior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun). Junior Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) added two hits, a run and an RBI, classmate Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) added two RBI's and a run scored and freshman Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) scored a pair of runs for the Valiants. Brad Clemens had three hits and two RBI's for Eastern (11-19, 6-9 MACF).

A pair of Manhattanville errors led to five Eastern runs in the first inning, but the Valiants, as they've been all year, were quick to answer, thanks to a trio of Eastern errors. Scoggins and Iannarilli opened the second with back-to-back doubles, with Iannarilli advancing to third on the first Eagles error. After sophomore Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) drove in Iannarilli with a sacrifice fly, Quatrochi singled to center and advanced to second on the second Eastern error. The final error of the inning allowed Silvestri to reach and Quatrochi to score the third Manhattanville run of the inning.

The score remained 5-3 until the top of the sixth when Scoggins singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, took third on a line out by Iannarilli, then scored on another Roper sacrifice fly. Eastern got the run back and tacked on to its lead with a two-run bottom of the sixth.

Quatrochi led off the Manhattanville seventh with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Silvestri later plated him with an RBI double. A two-out bases loaded walk to Iannarilli made it a one-run game, but the Valiants couldn't push across the tying run. Manhattanville put the tying run on second with one out in the ninth, but Steve Sattanino, who pitched the final 2.1 for Eastern, stranded the runner to end the game.

The Valiants next host the Lehman College Lightning in a single non-conference game Tuesday April 16 at 3:30 p.m.
