Feinstein's Monster Day, Cefaloni and Rothman's Outings Pace Baseball Past Lehman

PURCHASE, NY – A career day for a freshman and two outstanding long relief appearances from underclassmen led the Manhattanville College baseball team to a 19-6 win over the Lehman College Lightning Tuesday April 16 from Manhattanville Field.

Freshman Zachary Feinstein (Stamford, Conn./Westhill), in his fourth collegiate start, went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and seven RBI's, including a grand slam for Manhattanville (16-13). Seniors Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and Kieran Corrigan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) combined for five RBI's and four runs scored, juniors Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) combined for three hits, three RBI's and six runs scored and sophomore Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had two hits and two RBI's. As a team, Manhattanville walked 13 times, including four for Scoggins and two each for Lynch and Matero.

On the mound, sophomore Christian Cefaloni (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) bounced back from early struggles, retiring 10 of the final 14 batters he faced, including three strikeouts. Junior Mike Rothman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) turned in one of his finest performances as a Valiant, allowing just one run over four innings, striking out two.

For Lehman (7-20), Mark Vargas and Jeremmy Santos finished a combined 6-for-8 with four runs and three RBI's.

With Lehman up 2-1 in the top of the second, Santos hit a three-run homer to right field, putting the Lightning up four. After pushing across a run via a fielder's choice in the third, the Valiant bats awoke in grand fashion in the fourth. With two out and nobody on, Matero, classmate Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Scoggins all singled, with Matero scoring on Scoggins' hit. Iannarilli and Corrigan followed with walks, Shaffer scoring on Corrigan's walk. After Merrill was hit by a pitch forcing in Scoggins, Feinstein launched a fly ball to right field that hit the top of the fence before dropping down just beyond it for his first collegiate home run. The Valiants scored seven runs in the inning on just four hits, seizing a 10-5 lead.

After a scoreless fifth, Merrill singled with one out in the sixth, then came all the way around to score on a Feinstein double to right-center. After Lynch walked, Matero followed with a double of his own, scoring both Lynch and Feinstein, putting Manhattanville up 13-5.

Scoggins led off the seventh with a walk, then advanced to second on a single by Iannarilli. After Merrill was hit by his second pitch of the day, Feinstein drove in senior pinch-runner Matt Coleman (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Iannarilli with his second double of the day. After sophomore Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) walked to load the bases, Lynch drove in Merrill and sophomore pinch-runner Justin Neugebauer (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) with a single, making it 17-5 Valiants.

After Lehman pushed a run across in the top of the eighth, freshman Chris Murphy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) walked to open the bottom of the inning, then advanced to second when Scoggins reached on an error. Coleman followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Murphy. Corrigan then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring freshman pinch-runner Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) with the final run of the day.

The Valiants are back in action tomorrow in a "road" game against the Dolphins from the College of Mount Saint Vincent at Manhattanville Field, first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
