PURCHASE, NY – Freshman
Ryan Powers (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) turned in an outstanding performance on the mound, but the Manhattanville College baseball team faltered late, dropping a 9-6 non-conference game to the John Jay College Bloodhounds Tuesday April 23 from Manhattanville Field.
Powers went six innings, allowing just one run and five hits while striking out 11, the most by a Valiant pitcher since April 2014. 10 different Manhattanville (20-14) batters had at least one hits, led by sophomore
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), the only Valiant who recorded two. Junior
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a hit and a run scored, senior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) singled for his 198th career hit, stole two bases and scored two runs, freshman
Zachary Feinstein (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) doubled and scored a run, sophomore
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) singled, walked, scored a run and drove in another, sophomore
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) drove in two runs and junior
Jonathan Lattarulo (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) had an RBI hit.
For John Jay (12-23), Sean Napier had four hits in five at-bats, while Chris Meditz allowed just one run in three innings of relief, picking up his first win of the season.
The Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but Powers was in the zone early, striking out three in the first, two in the second and two in the third. The Valiants tied the game in the third when Lynch singled and Matero doubled to deep right, plating Lynch.
Lattarulo gave the Valiants the lead in the fourth when he singled in Feinstein, who doubled to right center and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. Manhattanville added three more in the fifth when junior
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) singled in Scoggins and, after a dropped foul ball kept the inning alive, Tuite singled in Shaffer and freshman pinch-runner
Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes).
After Powers exited prior to the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds took full advantage of the Manhattanville bullpen, scoring seven times on just five hits, snagging an 8-5 lead. Shaffer singled in Scoggins in the bottom of the inning, trimming the deficit to 8-6, but John Jay got the run back in the top of the ninth while Meditz and Nick Jack held Manhattanville to just four hits over the final 4.1 innings.
The Valiants welcome the Purchase College Panthers to Manhattanville Field in the Battle for Anderson Hill Road tomorrow, Wednesday April 24, at 4 p.m.
