Scoggins Reaches 200 Hits and Ciuffetelli Tosses Gem as Baseball Blanks Purchase 16-0

PURCHASE, NY – Freshman Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) tossed six shutout innings and senior Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) surpassed 200 career hits in a 16-0 win for the Manhattanville College baseball team over the Purchase College Panthers in the Battle for Anderson Hill Road Wednesday, April 24 from Manhattanville Field.

Scoggins became just the fourth player in program history, and first since 2010, to reach the 200-hit mark.

Ciuffetelli struck out six and allowed just three hits for Manhattanville (21-14), lowering his ERA nearly three-quarters of a run. Scoggins finished 3-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs before being pulled for a pinch-runner in the fourth inning. Sophomore Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) went 2-for-4 with two runs, freshman Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI's and junior Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) went 1-for-3 with four RBI's; junior pitcher John Cirillo (Stormville, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) recorded his first hit of the season and senior pitcher Francisco Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) singled in his first collegiate at-bat. In all the Valiants finished with 20 hits, with 15 players recording at least one.

Sitting on 198 career hits entering the game, Scoggins reached 199 with an RBI double in the first, scoring Lynch, who led off the inning with a walk. Junior Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) followed with an RBI single scoring Viscusi, who had reached on an infield single. Silvestri plated Scoggins with a sacrifice fly, giving the Valiants a 3-0 lead after the first.

With one out and one on in the third, Scoggins reached the milestone mark with a single to right field. A bases-loaded walk to Silvestri and sacrifice fly by freshman Zachary Feinstein (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) gave Manhattanville a 5-0 lead after the inning. Scoggins' milestone day ended in the fourth following a two-run single put the Valiants up 7-0.

In the fifth, Feinstein and sophomore Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) started the inning with singles. After a fly out and a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, Cirillo – who came on as a pinch-runner – scored when classmate Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached on a throwing error. Matero followed with a double to center field, scoring freshman pinch-runner Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes).

After a pitching change by Purchase (15-16), Viscusi greeted the reliever with a two-run single to center, taking second on the throw home. After freshman Johnny Mariano (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) reached on an infield single, Silvestri doubled to right field scoring two more. Cirillo followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Silvestri. In all, the Valiants scored seven runs on eight hits in the inning.

The score held until the bottom of the eighth. Jaile led off the inning with an infield single, much to the delight of the Manhattanville dugout. After a double by sophomore Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) sent Jaile to third, sophomore Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) plated Jaile with a groundout. After a strikeout, senior Matt Coleman (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) scored Careccia with a double to right field.

Freshman Nick Carita (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) tossed the final two innings as Manhattanville closed out its second 16-0 win of the season. The Valiants open their final Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom series of the season Friday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. in a possible MAC Freedom Tournament preview against the DeSales University Bulldogs.
