Box Score 2 CENTER VALLEY, PA – Sophomore
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) tossed a complete game for the
Manhattanville College baseball team as the Valiants earned a split of a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader with the
DeSales University Bulldogs Saturday April 27, winning the first game 8-1 before dropping the second game 11-3.
Shaffer went seven innings in the Valiants' win, holding a Bulldogs offense averaging more than seven runs a game to just six hits while striking out five. The Manhattanville (22-15, 13-7 MACF) lineup produced top-to-bottom, with the team's 1-4 hitters – junior
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), sophomore
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), freshman
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and senior
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) – going a combined 6-for-14 with four runs and five RBI's. Junior
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) launched a solo home run, freshman
Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and sophomore
Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Quatrochi and Careccia continued to produce in the second game, with each recording two hits, as did sophomore
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland), but Cody Mish had three hits and three RBI's and Robby Lamm had two hits and three RBI's for DeSales (21-16, 14-6 MACF)
GAME 1: Shaffer allowed a run on two hits in the bottom of the second, but escaped further trouble when, with the bases loaded and one out, he recorded a strike out and a pop out to get out of the inning.
With two out and nobody on in the third, the top of the order put the Valiants on top. Lynch singled, Matero followed, being hit by a pitch (for the 14th time this season), then both scored when Viscusi doubled to right field. Scoggins followed with an infield single, plating Viscusi for a 3-1 Manhattanville lead.
The Valiants added to their lead in the fourth when Silvestri led off with his home run and, following a walk, a single and a sac bunt, Lynch delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring junior
Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham).
After a Quatrochi RBI groundout made it 6-1 Manhattanville in the fifth, RBI doubles by Careccia and Matero in the seventh broke the game open for Manhattanville, as Shaffer closed out his first career complete game.
GAME 2: DeSales scored twice in the first and four more times in the second. An RBI single by Quatrochi in the third and an RBI double by Careccia in the fourth pulled the Valiants within four, 6-2, but the Bulldogs tacked on two more in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Careccia doubled in the sixth, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an ensuing throwing error, but it was not enough for Manhattanville, who left eight men on base, including four in scoring position.
The teams will close out their three-game series tomorrow, April 28 at 12 p.m. from Manhattanville Field.
