PURCHASE, N.Y. — In their last home matches of the 2019 season, the Manhattanville College men's and women's tennis teams competed with DeSales University Wednesday, April 24 at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts.
On the men's side, junior
Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)) and sophomore
Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) picked up an 8-4 victory in first doubles. In second doubles action, the freshman team of
Alvaro de la Plaza (Malaga, Spain/Homeschooled (Laurel Springs, Calif.)) and
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had a successful 8-3 win, followed by junior
Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) and freshman
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) coming away with an 8-6 victory in third doubles.
In first singles competition, Huertas picked up a three-set, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 win to keep the Valiants rolling. de la Plaza had a successful day in singles action as well, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win in second doubles, followed by Senkerik's 6-1, 6-0 victory in third singles. In fourth singles, Fleischman went the full three sets but was able to win a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 decision. Schlapak fell in fifth singles by a 1-6, 5-7 score, and Crowley picked up a win in a defaulted match in sixth singles, giving the Valiants an 7-2 victory on the day.
For the women, freshman
Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and junior
Izzy Lovejoy (Madison, Conn./Forman School) started off with an 8-3 win in first doubles, followed by a 3-8 second doubles loss by senior
Lizza Gonzalez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/The Ashton School) and sophomore
Sunny Tonnesen (Oslo, Norway/EF Academy). Senior
Stephanie Stumm (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) and freshman
Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) fell in third doubles by an 8-2 score, leaving the Valiants behind 2-1.
In first singles action, Charley picked up a strong 6-1, 6-1 victory, followed by a second doubles victory for Gonzalez (6-0, 6-0). Freshman
Samantha Altman (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) fell in third singles (1-6, 0-6), and in fourth singles, Lovejoy fell by the same score. The Valiants closed out the day with two more losses by Stumm in fifth singles (1-6, 4-6), and Tonnesen in sixth singles (0-6, 7-5, 4-10), giving DeSales a 6-3 win.
Men's tennis returns to action Saturday, April 27 at Eastern University with a 1:00 p.m. start time, while the women are back on the court Friday, April 26 at Wilkes University, with matches getting underway at 3:30 p.m.
