ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — The Manhattanville College men's and women's tennis teams continued their strong play down the stretch of the 2019 season, finishing off the regular season with a sweep of Eastern University Saturday, April 27.
In women's first doubles play, freshman
Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and freshman
Samantha Altman (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) picked up an 8-5 win, and sophomore
Sunny Tonnesen (Oslo, Norway/EF Academy) and junior
Izzy Lovejoy (Madison, Conn./Forman School) won an 8-1 decision in second doubles. The senior duo of
Ariel Abdul-Mateen (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Medical Professions) and
Stephanie Stumm (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior)Â fell in third doubles by a 6-8 score, giving the Valiants a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
In first singles play, Charley went three sets but was unable to come away with a victory, falling 6-7 (8-10), 6-0, 3-6. Lovejoy also went the distance in second singles, but she too fell in the final set, dropping a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 2-6 decision. Altman got the Valiants back in the win column with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in third singles, followed by a fourth singles 6-2, 6-1 win by Tonnesen. Freshman
Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory in fifth singles, and Stumm won her sixth singles matchup by a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
In first doubles on the men's side, the freshman duo of
Alvaro de la Plaza (Malaga, Spain/Homeschooled (Laurel Springs, Calif.)) and
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) pick up an 8-7 (7-3) victory, and the team of sophomores
Maguire Balke (Yardville, N.J./Steinert) and
Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy)Â then picked up an 8-0 win in second doubles. The Eagles defaulted the third doubles matchup, giving the Valiants a 3-0 lead.
In first singles, Senkerik came away with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 win by de la Plaza in second singles. Freshman
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover)Â continued the winning for the Valiants, coming away with a three-set, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 victory in third singles. Crowley had a perfect match in fourth singles, winning a 6-0, 6-0 decision, and Balke picked up a victory in fifth singles by the same score. The Eagles then defaulted sixth singles to the Valiants, giving the team a 9-0 victory on the day and locking them into the No. 2 seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom standings. The team finishes the season with a six match winning streak and will compete in the first round of the MAC Freedom Tournament Tuesday, April 30 at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts.
