Softball Moves on at NCAA Regionals with 8-5 Win over Scranton, Faces Lynchburg Again Today

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – The Manhattanville College softball team matched its program record in wins Saturday afternoon, May 11, with its 41st victory of the season following an 8-5 win over the University of Scranton on day two of the NCAA Division III Softball Regional Championship on the campus of Virginia Wesley University.

The Valiants (41-3) rode graduate student pitcher Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) all the way to the NCAA victory over the Royals (32-15) and move on to this afternoon's all-important game versus the University of Lynchburg. The winner of that contest advances to the regional championship tomorrow, Sunday, May 11, versus Virginia Wesleyan. Feeney went 7.0 innings for the complete game victory, allowing two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Senior catcher Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) had a game, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a trio of RBI and score a pair of runs. Both her hits were home runs, her 14th and 15th of the season, to tie the program's single-season record. Sophomore centerfielder Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) extended her now-program-record hitting streak to 20 consecutive games and also had quite the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs. Senior Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) and Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) each had two RBI apiece. Buboi was 1-for-4 with a run as well, while Hartenstein was 2-for-4 with a double.

The Valiants took the game's initial lead following Hartenstein's two-out, two-run single in the top of the first. Scranton trimmed that lead to 2-1 after scoring once in the home half. Manhattanville score next in the top of the third when Torres launched a monster solo homer to make it 3-1. The Valiants blew it open in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-out rally. Buboi kicked it off with a two-run single – she advances to third on an error in right – that scored Casillas and fellow sophomore Brooke Franson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar). Torres immediately followed with a two-run blast to make it 7-1.

Scranton scratched two unearned runs across in the bottom of the fourth before Manhattanville got one back in the top of the fifth. With two outs and two runners on, Casillas blooped a single to left that plated fellow sophomore Jordyn Boyd (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) from second. Despite a couple of rallies, neither squad scored until the Royals made a run in the bottom of the seventh. They needed five to tie but only managed two and Manhattanville moved on to the next game with the 8-5 win, while the season came to an end from Scranton.

The Valiants are now minutes away from facing Lynchburg for the second time this weekend with the right to advance to Sunday's championship versus Virginia Wesleyan.
