FARMINGTON, Conn. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team competed in a neck-and-neck match Friday afternoon, Aug. 30, at the University of Saint Joseph but was unable to capitalize on an 8-7 shots-on-goal advantage on the day and fell to the Blue Jays by a score of 2-0 to open the 2019 season.
The Valiants (0-1) and USJ (1-0) met at Kiki's Field, nearby to the Blue Jays' campus due to a last-minute field change. Despite that, both teams were unaffected and fired plenty of shots on net – a total of 15 between the two squads.
Manhattanville outshot Saint Joseph 8-2 in the first half as the Valiants dominated play with five shots on goal, but Blue Jays' keeper Lindsey Montminy stopped all of them to keep it scoreless heading into the second. USJ broke through in the 68th minute and scored again in the 78th for insurance. Sophomore keeper
Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made five stops in the second half, but the two goals were enough to give the Blue Jays the win.
Highlights:
- Manhattanville had four corners to USJ's one.
- Junior midfielder Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep) led all players in both shots (5) and shots on goal (3).
- Sophomore defender Ashley Hayes (Springfield, Ore./Thurston) also had four shots, two of which landed on net.
- Olivia Belcourt and Alyssa Fecko were the goal-scorers for Saint Joseph.
The squad returns to the pitch this coming Wednesday, Sept. 4, when the Crimson and White travels to Madison, N.J., for a non-conference contest at Drew University. The Valiants and Rangers are scheduled to kick-off at 4:00 p.m.
