GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team fell short in the first game of the William Smith Classic today, Saturday, Sept. 14, by a score of 3-1 to the host William Smith College.
Manhattanville's (4-2) defense tallied a block and save by sophomore
Zoe Fillebrown (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) to hold the Herons scoreless in the first quarter. Fillebrown continued her strong play with two additional saves in the second quarter before William Smith's (1-3) Anna Rider scored off a rebound. Seniors
Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) and
Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) attempted to put goals on the board, but the Herons defense denied both opportunities.
As the Valiants trailed 1-0, Fillebrown denied an additional shot and sophomore
Raquel Brown (Claymont, Del./Brandywine) made a defensive save in the third to keep the Valiants in the game.
The Herons snuck a second shot by Fillebrown in the fourth quarter but that did not stump the Valiants. Junior
Arnise King (Wilmington, Del./Concord) challenged the Herons' goalie Alexandra DeVito one-on-one and found the back of the cage. Manhattanville trailed 2-1 for a few minutes until William Smith's Mackenzie Wodka scored the third goal for the Herons.
The Valiants will play their second and final game of the William Smith Classic tomorrow morning, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. against St. Lawrence University.
