Men's and Women's Tennis Compete Against Sage

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College men's and women's tennis teams competed against The Sage Colleges at home on Sunday, Sept. 22. Both teams fought hard, the men earned a 9-0 victory and the women fell by a score of 6-3.

The men's victory was their first of the season. The Valiants were able to bounce back after a tough loss earlier in the week. The team competed well in all phases and swept both doubles and singles.

At first doubles, graduate student Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and sophomore Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) won 8-2. At second doubles, junior Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) and junior Maguire Balke (Yardville, N.J./Steinert) earned an 8-0 win and in the third doubles spot, sophomore Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) and freshman Asa Barkan (Pleasantville, N.Y./Briarcliff) won by a score 8-1.

Singles went just as well. In the first singles spot, Crowley won 6-2, 6-4. At second singles Balke defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-1, at third singles, freshman Max Moeller (Crestwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) won 6-1, 6-0 and in the fourth singles spot, Barkan won 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Jaime Peredo (Uruapan, México/Instituto Morelos) secured a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fifth singles and sophomore Fabian Meiser (Cologne, Germany/Woodstock Academy (Conn.)) won 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles. It was a strong performance throughout the lineup for the men's team and they moved their record to 1-1 on the season.

The women lost in another tight match. The 6-3 defeat was their third of the season and pushed their record to 0-3. The Valiants earned two singles victories and one doubles victory in the match. The two singles wins came from sophomore Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and senior Izzy Lovejoy (Madison, Conn./Forman School). Charley secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first singles and Lovejoy won 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 at the third singles position. The lone doubles win also came from Charley and Lovejoy who paired up at first doubles for an 8-6 victory. Senior Sunny Tonnesen (Oslo, Norway/EF Academy) and sophomore Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) nearly pulled out a tight second doubles match, but they were defeated in a tie breaker and the final set score was 8-7(5).

Both teams return to action next week. The women travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:00 P.M in a Skyline Conference matchup. The men return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 on the road against Ramapo College at 10:00 A.M. in Mahwah N.J.
