PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Vassar College at GoValiants.com Field on Friday, Sept. 4.
The Valiants (1-0-1) struck first after a back and forth start to the game. Freshman forward
Eli Pardo (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) found the back of the net in the 35th minute on a shot assisted by sophomore midfielder
Nico Diaz (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) after a scramble in front of the goal. The Brewers (2-0-1) did not wait long to answer and in the 44th minute Vassar's Reis Kissel sent a header off of a corner kick into the goal. The first half ended with the game knotted at one.
In a scoreless second half, the intensity ramped up. The two teams traded yellow cards starting with junior defender
Alex Juma (Harlem, N.Y./NYC iSchool) in the 67th minute. Vassar's Nolan Alexander would reciprocate with a yellow of his own in the 90th minute. Despite the high intensity, the game would remain tied after two halves of play. Freshman goalkeeper
Patryk Siwiec (Queens, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) did his part and stopped three shots in the half to help push the game into overtime.
The intense play continued into the overtime period. Vassar goalkeeper Will Marment received an immediate red card when he fouled Manhattanville during a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Vassar received one more yellow card in the 102nd minute as well. The Valiants let loose four shots in the two overtime periods, but the Brewers stood tall despite being down a man. The game would end in a 1-1 draw and the Crimson and White moved to 1-0-1 on the season.
Manhattanville will return to action this weekend with road games at Union College on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday, Sept. 8.
