Field Hockey Takes First Loss of the Season

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team took its first lost today, Sept. 8, against Roger Williams University 2-0.

The Valiants (3-1) came out strong offensively starting with two penalty corners being taken by freshman Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling), with senior Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) getting shots off from both. Thomas sent one shot wide and another was stopped by the Hawks (3-1) defense. Following Manhatanville's corners, Roger Williams was given the same opportunity. Hawk Alex Coppinger scored the first goal of the day off of the corner, giving RWU an early lead.

Sophomore Lexi Crites (Middleboro, Mass./Kents Hill School) took the first shot of the second quarter, but Hawks goalie Callie Flanagan was able to keep the score in her favor. An additional penalty corner was secured by the Hawks and Sydney McCarthy was able to put the last goal of the day away.

The best offensive opportunity for the Valiants presented itself in the third quarter. Junior Arnise King (Wilmington, Del./Concord) had a one-on-one with Flanagan who was able to knock King's shot away. Manhattanville totaled 11 shots, six of them on goal, six penalty corner opportunities and junior Elaina Nacinovich (Patterson, N.Y./Carmel) tallied five saves.

The Valiants will hit the road again on Wednesday, Sept. 11, traveling to New Haven, Conn., to play Albertus Magnus College at 4:00 p.m.
