Women’s Basketball Rallies in Second Half Holding Old Westbury to Six Points

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—The Manhattanville College women's basketball team won their 10th game in a row against The College at Old Westbury today, Jan. 14. The Valiants trailed the Panthers 30-25 at the half but came out on top in the second half and only allowed Old Westbury to score a total of six points. Manhattanville took down the Panthers 61-36.

The first half was a tight game between the Valiants (12-1, 8-1 Skyline) and Panthers (5-9, 5-4 Skyline) as they went shot for shot in the first quarter. Junior Spencer Shore's (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) three-pointer and a few made free throws from the team is what made the difference in the first quarters score.

Old Westbury's defense held Manhattanville to eight points in the second. Junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty), sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) and freshman Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) were the only Valiants to put points on the board. There was one fast break layup scored and it was by Smith. It happened after Valentin grabbed a rebound passed it up to Johnson-Desilvia who then found Smith under the basket.

The Crimson and White went into the second half trailing 30-25. They came out fired up and made three unanswered baskets and took the lead. At the midway point Panther Davida Warren was fouled and made both of her free throws to tie the game at 32. These were the last points Old Westbury saw all quarter. Manhattanville scored eight more unanswered points and closed the quarter ahead by eight.

The Valiants scored 11 points off of turnovers in final quarter. Smith caused two turnovers and made a layup for herself and passed her second stolen ball off to Shore for a three. Shore also made another three off of Pemberton's steal in the opening minutes of the fourth. Manhattanville scored 19 unanswered points before the Panthers could hit a shot with four seconds left on the clock.

The 19 point scoring spree consisted of Smith, junior Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East), Shore and Johnson-Desilvia making three's and layup's. One second chance point came from Shore after Pemberton grabbed the Panther's rebound pushed it to Shore who missed a three. Coutu clinched the offensive rebound and then passed it to Valentin who found Shore open once again behind the three-point line. Shore stepped up and sunk the shot.

Shore lead the Valiants in points totaling 18. She shot .444 from the three-point line and .548 from the field. Johnson-Desilvia followed Shore in points notching 14. Half of her points came from the free-throw line.

The Valiants will return home this Saturday, Jan. 18, and host Farmingdale State College at 1:00 p.m. in Kennedy Gym.
