Women's Hockey Defeats King's, Lopes Nets Hat Trick

RYE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's hockey team secured its second win of the weekend with an 8-1 win over United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent, King's College on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Valiants remain undefeated in conference-play with the victory.

Manhattanville (8-5-2, 6-0 UCHC) wasted little time putting the game away. They were up 3-0 after one period of play and never looked back. King's (1-12-1, 0-7 UCHC) did not score its first goal until the beginning of the third period and by then the score was 7-1. A late third period goal from junior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) made the final score 8-1 and the Valiants left the ice with the victory.

Five different players found the back of the net for Manhattanville. Lopes led all scorers with three goals, picking up the hat trick. She also had two assists. Senior defender Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride (JWHL)) notched a goal and two assists, junior forward Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) added two goals and two assists, junior forward Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) had two goals, two assists as well and senior defender Ali Howard (Rye, N.Y./Rye) finished with a goal and two assists.

The Crimson and White excelled on both the power play and penalty kill against the Monarchs. They scored on three of their six power play opportunities and killed off five of their own penalties, adding two short-handed goals. Senior goalie Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) made eight saves in her seventh win of the season.

The Valiants have nearly a week off before returning to action next weekend. The team will travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on UCHC opponent Nazareth College. Puck drop is set for 3:30 P.M. on Friday, Jan. 24.
