RIVERDALE, N.Y. – With six seconds remaining in regulation and trailing by two points, Manhattanville College men's basketball senior
JoJo Cobbs (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) grabbed the inbounds pass, ran the length of the court and laid in a buzzer-beating bucket to send a hard fought back-and-forth game to overtime. There, the visiting Valiants cemented the 71-67 victory over Skyline Conference foe the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
The Crimson and White (9-6, 4-2 Skyline) trailed the hosting Dolphins (5-10, 2-4 Skyline) by six points following the first half of play, but managed to make up that deficit in the second 20 minutes in order to force overtime. In that extra period, Manhattanville outscored CMSV 11-7 en route to their fourth victory of the season and currently sit in second place in the north division standings.
Junior
Mike Granda (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) led the Valiants with 18 points and has continued his strong season, having now scored in double figures in all 15 contests so far. Freshman
Khari Taylor (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) had his best performance as a collegian, notching season high marks in points (13) and rebounds (game-high 13) against the Dolphins for his first career double-double. Cobbs and sophomore
Jake Dunn (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) each finished with 13 points as well.
Following the game-tying and overtime-forcing basket by the Valiants, it was the Dolphins that took control early on in the extra frame. Mount Saint Vincent began overtime on a 7-2 run and held a five-point 67-62 lead with 2:36 remaining. From that moment forward, the Crimson and White defense clamped down and did not allow another point and closed out the game on a 9-0 run.
Dunn kicked it off with a layup quickly after a Dolphin three-pointer to make it a three-point game. Then, Dunn drew a foul and sank both free throws to make it a one-point game with 1:44 left. CMSV proceeded to miss a jumper, and Taylor snagged the rebound, followed closely by a made lay-in by Cobbs with under a minute remaining to give his squad the lead. Granda hit two free throws with 00:20 on the clock and Dunn capped off the victory with a fastbreak layup as time expired.
Manhattanville returns to the court this Saturday, Jan. 25, for a scheduled 3:00 p.m. road game in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Valiants will face St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in the second half of a women's-men's Skyline doubleheader. This will be just the second all-time meeting between the Crimson and White and the Bears, with the former defeating the latter 103-82 in the opening round of the 2018 AJ Buchanan Classic last season.
