DeStasio Sets Assists Record as Women’s Lacrosse Comes Back for 18-15 Win over Ramapo

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Despite trailing by three goals with just over 11 minutes to play, a series of yellow cards gave the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team several huge offensive opportunities. The Valiants managed to go from three goals down to Ramapo College and take the victory 18-15 by using a 7-1 run to close out the game on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at GoValiants.com Field. Junior Hailey DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) record seven assists on the afternoon to set the single-game program record.

Manhattanville (2-0) and the Roadrunners (0-1) started off the game in a back and forth affair. Ramapo jumped out to a 3-1 lead just under 10 minutes in before junior Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and sophomore Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) tied it up in a span of 14 seconds. The two squads traded goals for the remainder of the first half before the Valiants took a three-goal 9-6 lead following a pair of goals from sophomore Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) at 7:11 and 3:49. However, the Roadrunners scored two more before the end of the half to make a two-goal game.

Ramapo then scored three more – five straight overall – to start the second and take an 11-9 lead with 24:33 remaining. Eventually the Roadrunners took a 14-11 lead, and that's when the tide turned to the home team's favor. Ramapo was called for its fourth yellow card of the game which led to a non-releasable two-minute penalty and man-up opportunity for the Valiants beginning at 10:40.

Logue struck first, just nine seconds in, to make it 14-12. DeStatio struck next, just 16 second later, for her only goal of the game – she finished with a game-high eight points. Then, with 9:09 remaining, Logue scored her fifth goal of the game to knot it up at 14-14. Several minutes later, Ramapo was once again called for a non-releasable yellow card penalty, giving the Valiants another man-up opportunity with 6:18 remaining. Manhattanville proceeded to score three goals – two from Keenan and one from rookie Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) – to make it 17-14. The Roadrunners got one back at 3:33 but sophomore Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) sealed the win with the Valiants' 18th goal of the game.

Highlights:
  • Keenan finished with seven points, including five goals. She added four ground balls and seven draw controls.
  • Logue added an assist to her five-goal day to finish with six points. She also chipped in four ground balls and four draw controls.
  • O'Mara ended the day with three goals to go with six draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Freshman Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) chipped in two goals and a caused turnover.
