PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team fell to Western Connecticut State University by a score of 11-6, Saturday, Feb. 29. Three different Valiants scored more than one goal and senior goalie Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) made seven saves. The loss was the team's first of the season.
The Colonials jumped out to an early lead in the first half, scoring the game's first four goals. Manhattanville (2-1) finally broke through when freshman midfielder Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) scored on a free position shot. Western Connecticut (1-0) scored twice more before halftime and the score was 6-1 at the break.
The second half was a more even affair. Manhattanville scored four of the first five goals in the half to cut the lead to three and make the score 8-5. The Colonials then rattled off three-straight goals to take an 11-5 advantage. Sophomore Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) put one more shot into the back of the net to make the final score 11-6. Keenan, Kelly and sophomore attacker Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) each had two goals.
The Valiants return to the field next weekend, Saturday, March 7, against Rutgers-Camden University. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 P.M.
