Women’s Basketball Shuts Down Farmingdale State 71-47

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Another win was added to the Manhattanville College women's basketball team's schedule, today, Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Valiants topped Farmingdale State College 71-47 and doubled them in points in the first half.  
 
Junior Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) led the Valiants (18-2,14-2 Skyline) in points notching 25. She shot .500 from the field and in three-pointers. She split her points almost in half throughout the game and scored 15 of the 25 in first half. In the second quarter, Coutu made a three-pointer and a jumper in a nine point scoring spree the Valiants had over the Rams (8-11, 6-9). Freshman Olivia Kelley (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) started the scoring spree with a jump shot and junior Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) added a layup assisted by junior Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton).
 
Pemberton was the second leading scorer for Manhattanville with 19 points. She scored 25.0 percent of her baskets in the third. Pemberton started the quarter with a second chance basket as she grabbed the offensive rebound and then made a layup. She increased the lead by 24 to put the Valiants ahead 41-17. Defensively she also clinched two, rebounds as well as one assist and steal throughout the quarter.
 
Sophomore Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) caused a turnover in the paint and then ran the ball down the court for a made layup and an and one to start the scoring spree in the final quarter. Defensively the Crimson and White held the Rams to eight points in the fourth. Three steals were made by the Valiants and their shooting percentage was almost 10.0 percent higher than Farmingdale's. Manhattanville scored 10 unanswered points before the Rams could respond. It started with freshman Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) making a layup and then Valentin and sophomore Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) each notching layups. Smith ended the run with another layup that was also a second chance basket. Smith shot 100.0 percent from the field and made 66.7 percent of her free throws in the closing minutes.
 
The Valiants will next host Mount Saint Mary College this Saturday, Feb. 8, in Kennedy Gym at 1:00 p.m. The team will also be hosting an alumni day prior to the game at 10:00 a.m. in Kennedy Gym.
