PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team added another Valiant to the 1,000-point club in its 77-56 victory over Mount Saint Mary College, today, Feb, 8. The Crimson and White evened out the series history after they lost to the Knights the first time they faced each other earlier this season. The team ended the game shooting 50.0 percent from the three-point line and made 11 steals.
Junior
Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) was the leading scorer in the team victory and notched her 1,000th career point in todays game. In the third quarter, Coutu was passed the ball in the right corner and hit a three-pointer to make her the 17th women's basketball player to join the 1,000-point club at Manhattanville. Coutu totaled 24 points today and shot 100.0 percent from three-point range and 63.8 percent from the field. She also made two steals tonight putting her seven away from 200 career steals. As much as Coutu is as an offensive threat she also defensively averages 2.8 assist and 2.66 steals per game.
The Valiants (19-2, 15-2 Skyline) entered today's game wanting redemption after they fell short the first time they faced the Knights (17-5, 15-2 Skyline) this season. Mount Saint Mary took a short lead in the first few minutes but Coutu took that away with a jump shot to put the Valiants ahead 10-8. She made another jumper right after and junior
Amanda Pemberton (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) quickly followed with a layup. The Crimson and White didn't lose the lead after this six-point cushion.
The Crimson and White scored 12 points in the second and Coutu had five of those points. She made a three-pointer assisted by Pemberton and made two free throws. To put the Valiants ahead by 14, sophomore
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) stole the ball from Knights and went coast to coast for a layup. Pemberton was the next and last Valiant to score for the half, she put them ahead 34-24.
Freshman
Jamie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) recorded her fourth double-double of the season notching 10 points and rebounds in today's game. In the third quarter Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and put up a second chance layup to assist the Valiants to the victory. After this play, junior
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) hit a three-pointer as Valentin, Pemberton and Johnson-Desilvia each followed with baskets to up the score to 50-35. At this point, Coutu had nine points totaled throughout the game. Pemberton passed the ball to Coutu in the corner for the three-pointer that added her to the 1,000-point club.
Coutu then continued to score half of the points the Valiants put up in the final quarter. The Crimson and White started to take away a large lead as Johnson-Desilvia and Shore opened it with a layup and three-pointer respectively. Coutu followed Shore's three with another three of her own to put the Valiants ahead by 23.
Pemberton was one rebound shy of joining Smith with a double-double as she had 14 points and nine rebounds. Pemberton also gave out three assists and had two steals. Johnson-Desilvia was the second leading scorer with 16 total points, however, she was tied for first in assists. Herself and Coutu each assisted five baskets.
The Crimson and White will start a two game Skyline Conference road campaign. They will first take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy this Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Kings Point, N.Y. The two programs faced each other earlier this season and Manhattanville topped the Mariners 75-51.
