MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. – Senior
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) tossed six quality innings of two-run ball for the Manhattanville College baseball team on Saturday, Feb. 29, striking out six batters and allowing six hits for his and the Valiants first victory of the 2020 campaign. The squad defeated John Jay College on Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach by a score of 11-2.
The Valiants (1-3), slated as the home club for the neutral game, kicked it off against the Bloodhounds (1-1) with a four-run second inning. All four were unearned, but senior
Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) did knock in one of those runs with his first triple of the season.
Manhattanville then put up three more runs two inning later in the bottom of the fourth. Senior
Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) started off the scoring with a single to plate junior
Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk). Next, junior
Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) walked a run in with the bases loaded, and senior
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) wrapped up the offense for the inning with a fielder's choice in another bases loaded opportunity.
Trailing 7-0 after four, John Jay finally scratched a couple runs across in the top of the fifth, but the Valiants answered in the home half to make it 8-2 with an RBI-triple from rookie
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach). Senior
Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) – who finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI – played another run for Manhattanville in the bottom of the sixth on the strength of a double to make it 9-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) picked up his first-career RBI as he entered the game as a pinch hitter. He knocked in Tebolt with a double to make it 10-2. For good measure, the Valiants snuck one more across in the bottom of the eighth to seal it at 11-2.
Proteau earned the win on the mound for Manhattanville, but sophomore
Ryan Powers (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and senior
Liam Sarna (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) also had strong outings. The former tossed 1.0 scoreless with a strikeout and one hit, while the ladder finished up the game with 2.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out three of the eight batters he faced.
Manhattanville returns to the field today, Sunday, March 1, for an afternoon doubleheader in Myrtle Beach against Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
