Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Manhattanville College baseball team split their doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene College, Sunday, March 1. The team fell by a score of 10-8 in the first game and then defeated Eastern Nazarene by a score of 9-2 in the second game.
 
Manhattanville (2-4) led for the majority of the game. Doubles from junior catcher Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and junior infielder Hathaway Roper (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) sent in three runs to start the first inning and then one more run was scored to give the Valiants four runs in the top of the first. Eastern Nazarene (4-1) added one run of their own and the score was 4-1 after one inning.
 
The Valiants remained on top until the sixth inning and led 7-3 headed into the bottom of the sixth. The Lions then caught fire in the bottom of sixth, scoring seven runs to take their first lead of the game. The score was 10-7 heading into the seventh and Manhattanville was only able to muster one run in the inning and the final score was 10-8.
 
The second game began similarly to the first, with the Valiants taking an early lead. Through three innings they led by a score of 4-0 after a double by senior second baseman Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and a single by sophomore first baseman Zachary Feinstein (Stamford, Conn./Westhill). Manhattanville then added five more runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead headed into the seventh and final inning. The Lions only mustered two more runs in the top of the seventh and the final score was 9-2.
 
The Valiants face New England College tomorrow, Monday, March 2, for the final game of their Myrtle Beach, S.C. trip.
