Baseball Loses to New England in High-Scoring Affair

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Manhattanville College baseball team fell to New England College by a score of 18-13, Monday, March 2. Junior catcher Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) went 3-5 and hit two home runs in the loss.

Manhattanville (2-5) took the early lead right out of the gates, after two and a half innings they led by a score of 4-0 thanks to two home runs back to back by senior shortstop Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and senior second baseman Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South). Momentum began to swing in favor of the Pilgrims in the bottom of the third. They scored six runs to take a 6-4 lead. Manhattanville quickly bounced back and added two runs with help from Lynch's triple and senior outfielder Luke Tebolt's (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) single late in the fourth.

The score remained tied at six apiece until Mahnattanville broke the tie in the sixth inning. Tebolt and Matero both hit home runs bringing the score to 9-6 in favor of the Valiants. The Pilgrims quickly came back to tie it at nine all by the end of the sixth. Again, the Valiants struck back to go up 11-9 after the top of the seventh.

The bottoom of the seventh is when things went downhill for the Valiants. After allowing 6 runs during the inning, the Pilgrims lead 15-9. Manhattanville was unable to recover after that, despite more runs from each team. The final score was 18-13 after nine innings.

The Valiants return to the field Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 P.M. at Wesley College for a double header.
