BRISTOL, R.I. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team faced off with Roger Williams University on the road today, Saturday, March 7, and despite closing the game on a 9-5 run, the Valiants were unable to overcome a slow first quarter en route to the 13-9 loss to the Hawks.
Manhattanville (1-3) fell behind 6-0 to Roger Williams (3-2) after the first quarter, and 8-0 following the first 3:49 of the second. It was then when the Valiants offense finally surged to life as senior
Nick Delia (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored his first of the game and team-leading ninth of the season with 7:43 left until the half. Fellow fourth-year
Will Duval (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay) notched the next score – assisted by rookie
Stephen Magarelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Senior) – to make it 8-2 with 5:00 on the clock. Then in the waning moments, another senior –
Ty Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos) – found the back of the RWU cage with just 00:04 remaining to make it 8-3.
The Hawks and Valiants then traded goals back and forth for the entirety of the third quarter and the score read 12-6 following 45:00 of play. Caccavo scored his second of the game at 10:57 in the third, followed by Duval's second at 6:07. Magarelli briefly made it an 11-6 game with 3:43 remaining until the fourth – assisted by sophomore
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) – before Roger Williams scored with under three minutes left to end the quarter.
Manhattanville ran off three straight goals to start the fourth quarter and make it a three-score game at 12-9 with 3:10 remaining. Duval scored two more at 8:01 and 5:10 to notch four on the day and eight for the season. Two minutes later, Magarelli – assisted by Duval – struck again. Unfortunately, just one goal was scored for the remainder of the contest and it went to the visitors who sealed the four-goal win.
Highlights:
- Junior Mike McGrath (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) made his first start of the season in net for the Valiants and stopped 11 shots between the pipes. He also notched five ground balls.
- Duval (five points), Magarelli (three points) and Caccavo (two points) were the Valiants' leading scorers.
- Junior Simon Boisvert (Pointe Claire, Que./Millbrook School) led Manhattanville with seven ground balls and tied Magarelli for the team lead in caused turnovers with two.
- The Valiants were 22-of-29 in clear attempts.
The squad returns to action with another road game on Wednesday night, March 11, in Glenside, Pa., against Arcadia University at 5:00 p.m. The Knights have won both all-time meetings between the two programs, but the pair haven't met since 2014.
