Manhattanville Women's Tennis Collects Victory Over Pratt

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's tennis team picked up a non-conference win on Tuesday evening, defeating Pratt Institute, 5-4. The win snaps a four-match skid for the Valiants, improving their season record to 3-5.

The Valiants jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the competition of the doubles matches. Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Soundview Prep) picked up an 8-2 win over the Pratt duo of Sophie Bischoff and Nastazja Cancellaro in No. 1 Doubles. Over in the second flight, Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) defeated Emily Guan and Nicole Delp, 8-1. The Cannoneers collected the point in Doubles No. 3 by default with the Valiants not having a third team.

With Pratt taking the points for Singles No. 5 and 6 by default, the Valiants would need to win three of four singles matches to win the day's competition. After Julia Ognibene defeated Brown 6-0, 6-0 in Singles No. 4, Manhattanville was on the brink of defeat. However, after Pretnar (6-4, 6-1) and Charley (6-3, 6-2) closed out their matches, the deciding point came down to the No. 3 Singles contest between Ulzheimer and Moira Cunningham. Ulzheimer would take the first set, 7-5, before Cunningham took the second set by the same score. With darkness approaching after sunset, the two battled in a decisive breaker third set, with Ulzheimer claiming the victory, 10-5.
