RYE, N.Y. – Closing out their weekend series, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley College 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants remain undefeated in the early season, now sporting a 4-0 record both overall and in the UCHC.
The scoring was fast and furious for the Valiants, who netted four first period goals to take control of the contest. While Lebanon Valley did strike first, Manhattanville responded with authority as five different skaters found the back of the Flying Dutchmen net.
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) scored twice in the contest, bringing her season total to five, tying
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) for the team lead. Miller would score a goal of her own as part of the four-goal first period, while
Faithe Harris (Castlegar, B.C./Pacific Steelers (JWHL)),
Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy), and
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) each scored in the contest as well.
The Flying Dutchmen got on the board eight and a half minutes into the game, as Lebanon Valley capitalized on a power play opportunity and Abby Radcliffe was able to score with the skater advantage. The lead was short-lived, as Harris would score on a shot setup by
Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and
Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) three minutes later to bring the score back even at 1-1. Two minutes later, Lebanon Valley seemed poised to reclaim the lead with another power play chance, but Cox would work the open ice and take a pass from netminder
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) to score a shorthanded goal to take the lead. Cox would set up a Miller tally in the 17
th minute before the junior struck again with less than 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Assisted by
Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) and
Ciara Dauer (Winchester, MA/Worcester Academy), Cox capped off the offensive showcase that was the first period by giving the Valiants a 4-1 lead.
Seven minutes into the second, Cox was involved once again with her fourth point of the day, setting up Meredith's power play goal. The Flying Dutchmen were able to end the string of unanswered Manhattanville goals at five on Radcliffe's second score of the day, but the Crimson and White had one more score on their sticks before the game was said and done. The Valiants penalty kill that has shown a propensity to score as often as they clear the zone scored their second shorthanded goal of the day as Niedermier picked up her second assist of the day on Carr's tally. Manhattanville has now scored five shorthanded goals in the first four goals of the season.
Perhaps drained from the high octane play from the first two periods, the game ended with a 6-2 final following a scoreless final 20 minutes. Gerardi improved to 4-0-0 on the year in the cage for the Valiants, recording 24 saves on the day. The Valiants were 33-24 in faceoffs, with Miller winning 17 of her 28 draws. Manhattanville went 1-for-4 on power play opportunities while killing five of the six Lebanon Valley advantages.
