REISTERTOWN, Md. – Continuing their five-game road trip, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team earned a 5-3 conference win at Stevenson on Friday afternoon. The Valiants improve to 4-2-0 overall with the win and are now 4-1 in UCHC play.
With the score knotted up at 3-3 to begin the third period,
Jarod Lavallee (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) scored what would end up the game-winner with just over seven minutes left in regulation. The senior's fourth goal of the season, assisted by
Ben Steele (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and
Mason Emoff (Collingwood, Ont./Bishop's College School), beat Stevenson netminder Marko Sturma to put the Valiants back on top in the late going.
Prior to Lavallee's tally, the Valiants had three separate one-goal leads throughout the contest.
Raymond Speerbrecker (British Columbia, Canada/George Elliot Secondary School) opened up the scoring three minutes into the game, scoring a power play goal off assists from Glynn Robitalle and
Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/NVK Dominanta). The lead would be shortlived, however, as just 38 seconds later the Mustangs tied the game off a Mac Lowry shot. The Valiants would reclaim the lead before the end of the period, as
Troy Crosson (Hatfield, Pa./Pennridge) scored his first of the season from
Josh Fletcher (Calgary, Alb./Central Memorial) and
Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) in the 12
th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
Stevenson would erase the Manhattanville lead six and a half minutes after the second period puck drop as Brendan Rylott was able to fire one home for the home squad. Mateichenko would go on to give the Valaints their third lead of the day on the team's second power play goal, burying a feed from Robitaille and Speerbrecker halfway through the period. But as had been the case all day, Stevenson once again responded, this time with an Alex Rivet goal to begin the final 20 minutes tied at 3-3.
The third period lead would finally stick for Manhattanville, as
Tyler Roy (Brighton, MI/Brighton High School) turned away all 14 shots he faced in the period to secure the win. The reigning UCHC Goaltender of the Week made 31 total saves to pick up his fourth win of the season. With Sturma pulled for an additional Stevenson attacker in the closing seconds,
Josh Fletcher (Calgary, Alb./Central Memorial) put the game away with an empty netter assisted by
Niko Happo (Kauniainen, Finland/Haukilahti Upper Secondary School) and
Alex Rowella (Ridgefield, Conn./Holy Cross (H.S.)).
Manhattanville successfully killed all two Stevenson power plays on the day while going 2-for-3 with the man advantage. The Valiants won 23 of the game's 56 faceoffs, with Rowella leading the team with 12 draws won.
