PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a game that needed a shootout to determine the winner of the extra UCHC point,
Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) played the role of hero for the Manhattanville College men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon. The junior forward's tally gave the Valiants a 2-1 win in the shootout in the game that ended in a 2-2 tie after overtime against Chatham.
Jarod Lavallee (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) was first up in the shootout for the Vals, firing a shot past Cougar netminder Ricardo Gonzalez. Chatham responded with a goal from their first shooter, Max Wigfield, to push the shootout to 1-1. After
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) and Anthony Dom missed for their respective teams, Robitaille would net the deciding score as Carson Grainer was off-target with Chatham's final chance of the night.
It took until the second period for either team to get on the board, but the Valiants struck first as
Kyle Miller (Bristol, Conn./Trinity-Pawling) was assisted by
Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/NVK Dominanta) and
Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Salisbury School) a minute and a half after puck drop to give Manhattanville the one goal lead. The Cougars responded on a goal by Carson Grainer 13 minutes into the period. The game would not remain tied for long, as 57 seconds later Prestia scored a power play goal set up by Mateichenko and
Hayden Taylor (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) to put the Vals back on top.
Chatham would score their second of the night 3:39 into the third period, as Michael Lamison was able to fire one past
Tyler Roy (Brighton, MI/Brighton High School). That would be all for the offenses, as the remaining 21-plus minutes of the third and overtime would result in both defenses and goaltenders standing strong.
Roy had his fourth-straight 30 save performance, making a season-high 36 saves. After recording 10 stops in each of the first two periods, the junior stopped 14 shots in the third and both of the overtime attempts fired his way.
Manhattanville was 1-for-2 on power play opportunities and successfully killed all three Cougar man advantages, including a seven-shot onslaught in the third. The Valiants were 35-43 on faceoffs, with Lavallee winning 11 and
Raymond Speerbrecker (British Columbia, Canada/George Elliot Secondary School) victorious in 10 draws.
