AMHERST, Mass. – Even with goals in all three periods, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team was unable to find an answer to the high-powered Amherst offense, falling 7-3 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Valiants' record to 5-2-1 on the season.
Six straight goals scored by the Mammoths across the first and second periods was too much for Manhattanville to bounce back from in the fourth game of a five-game road trip.
After Amherst got on the board in the 6
th minute on a Gia Seravelli goal,
Hannah Beckman (North Plainfield, N.J./Rice Memorial Prep (Vt.)) responded in short order, scoring her third of the year on an unassisted goal 32 seconds later. It would take six more minutes for the lamp to be lit again, but Elizabeth DeCarlo's tally in the 12
th minute kickstarted the Amherst attack that would put the game out of reach over the ensuing 20 minutes. The Mammoths would score the next six goals, building up a 7-1 lead.
The Valiants would score the last two goals of the game, but the damage was already done by the home team.
Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) stopped Amherst's scoring streak with 19 seconds left in the second on a tally set up by
Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and
Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary). Ten minutes into the third, Niedermier would score a goal of her own, an unassisted effort for her second goal of the season.
Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) and
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) each blocked three shots in the loss.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) played 34:50 in net, making 30 saves and being charged with all seven goals allowed.
Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug High School) made eight saves in relief, playing more than 25 scoreless minutes.
Ana Tittmann (Salisbury, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) won a team-high nine draws for the Valiants. The 11 total shots by Manhattanville was their lowest in a game this season.
