NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team ended their five-game road trip on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 contest at Connecticut College. The loss drops Manhattanville's record on the year to 5-3-1.
The Valiants were unable to get anything going against the Camels' defensive unit, recording just eight total shots in the game. Sunday marked the lowest shot total in a single game by the Valiants in program history, supplanting the previous low of nine against Holy Cross in 2015.
With the extremely limited offensive chances,
Virginia Birnie (Ontario, Canada/Rosethay Netherwood School) was able to make the most of her opportunity, scoring on her only shot of the day in the second period. The freshman forward was assisted by
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) on her second career goal.
Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) was the only Valiant to find a modicum of consistent success against the Connecticut backline, registering a shot in each period. No other Valiant had more than one shot in the game.
The Camels took the lead 15:25 into the first as Casey Godfrey fired a shot past
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy). Miyu Miyazaki would score what would become the game winner 78 seconds into the second period off Camille Phelan's second assist of the day. Natalie Witkowski netted an insurance goal in the tailend of the second period.
While the Camels' Carly Denora wasn't frequently tested in net, the same cannot be said of Gerardi on the other side of the ice. The junior goaltender made 46 stops in the loss, and has now eclipsed 30 saves in her last three outings. Gerardi is not sporting a 2.36 goals-against average on the season with a .924 save percentage.
The Valiants went 0-for-3 on power play opportunities, recording just two shots on their man advantages. The Camels were unsuccessful on their lone power play of the game while going 22-14 in faceoff attempts.
Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) won five draws each for Manhattanville.
