RYE, N.Y. – Erasing a pair of one-goal first period deficits, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team defeated Chatham University 3-2 on Friday night. The victory gets Manhattanville back into the win column after a two-game skid and improves the Valiants' record 6-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 against the UCHC.
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) scored twice for the Valiants, while
Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) netted the game-winner on her first career goal. It was a two-point night for Felicio, as she earned the assist of Cox's opening tally on the night. Cox ended the night with three points, picking up an assist along with
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) on Felicio's goal.
Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) picked up the lone assist on Cox's second score.
Manhattanville's special teams excelled on the night, picking up a pair of power play goals while successfully killing all four of Chatham's advantages in the contest.
The Cougars got on the board first 7:41 into the opening period as Ally Nolan was set up by Lauren Carmody. Manhattanville capitalized on a golden opportunity to bring the score even after a pair of Cougars were sent to the box 30 seconds apart. With plenty of open ice on the 5-on-3, Cox fired the shot home to bring the game to 1-1. It appeared that was how the score would remain for the rest of the period, but with less than 20 seconds to play, Dena Akers lofted a puck towards the Manhattanville net. The floater was able to sneak past
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) to put Chatham back on top heading into the second.
It would be Cox once again providing the equalizer two and a half minutes into the new period, finishing the setup from Martignetti. Tied at two goals apiece, Ariel Garbin picked up a tripping penalty with 3:52 remaining in the second. The Valiants again capitalized on the power play, this time just 19 seconds in. Miller fired Manhattanville's first shot on the advantage, ringing the puck off the pipe. The rebound found Felicio's stick perfectly, setting her up to fire the follow-up home and give the home team their first lead of the night.
From there, it was the Gerardi show in net, stopping all 14 shots fired her way in the third period. The junior ended the night with 31 saves, her fourth consecutive game posting 30 or more stops. Gerardi improves to 5-3-1 on the season with a 2.31 goals-against averaged and a .926 save percentage.
The Valiants held a 33-22 advantage in faceoffs on the night. Miller won 16 draws, while Felicio was a perfect 9-0 in the circle.
