Manhattanville Women's Hockey Sweeps Chatham With 4-1 Win

RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team completed the two-game sweep of Chatham University on Saturday, defeating the Cougars by a final of 4-1. With the victory, Manhattanville improves to 7-3-1 on the season and 7-1-0 in the UCHC.

The Valiants scored the final four goals of the contest and lit the lamp in each period to earn the win on their home ice. The Cougars struck first just over seven minutes into the contest as Allison Corser-James was set up by Abi Fuzaylov and Ally Nolan to give the visitors a fairly early 1-0 lead. That would be the only blemish on Franny Gearardi's line for the night, as the junior goaltender was once again fantastic in net. She would end the night with 30 saves, 14 of which came in the first period.

While Gerardi was holding her own on one end of the ice, the Valiants offense took over on the other side. At 16:49, Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) would knot the game at 1-1 with an unassisted tally. The junior forward continues to lead the Manhattanville attack with 18 points on nine goals and nine assists.

Cox's score would be the last one for the period and it would take more than ten minutes into the second until the next puck was put into the net. Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) did the dirty work in the second, firing a pass from Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) past Chatham's Katy Reed with what would be the ultimate game winner.

The Valiants would net a pair late in the third to put the game on ice. A day after her first collegiate goal, Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) struck again with just over five minutes to play off assists from Cox and Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary). Trailing by two with 3:11 left on the clock, the Cougars pulled Reed from net to get an extra skater on the ice in hopes of mounting a comeback. The Valiants held strong in the face of the extra attacker and were able to clear the puck out of the zone and allow Meredith Holly to score the team's first empty net goal of the season off an assist from Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School).

The Valiants were 0-for-4 on power play chances with five shots while successfully killing all three Chatham power plays, including an extended 5-on-3 chance to open up the third. Faceoffs were slightly in favor of Manhattanville, 27-26, with Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) leading the way with 15 wins on the draw.
