Manhattanville Women's Hockey Succumbs to Wesleyan To End First Half of Season

RYE, N.Y. – A five-goal second period by the visiting Wesleyan Cardinals was too much for the Manhattanville College women's hockey team to overcome in their final game of the calendar year, dropping the non-conference tilt by a final of 6-1. Manhattanville ends the first half of the 2021-22 campaign with a record of 7-4-1.

For the second time this season, the Valiants were held under 10 shots in a game. The nine total shots was the second lowest total for Manhattanville this year to only the eight shot effort the team had against Connecticut College on Nov. 28.

Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) represented the lone goal for the Valiants, scoring her sixth of the season off an assist from Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) in the second period. The score at the time cut the Cardinals lead down to 2-1, but Wesleyan would score three more times before the period came to an end to put the game out of reach.

After a scoreless opening 20, the Cards struck first 1:50 into the second on a Chiara Christie shot. Four minutes later, Christina Tournas would extend the lead to two before Miller responded 7:19 into the frame. The score would hold at 2-1 in favor of the visitors until 14:45 in the second when Brigitte Goeler-Slough fired a shot home, the first of three goals for Wesleyan in the ensuing five minutes. Effie Tournas and Caroline Mezias would each light the lamp before the second concluded, giving the Cardinals a 5-1 lead.

Wesleyan would go on to add another goal in the third on Goeler-Slough's second score of the day.

Outside of Miller, Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) was the only Manhattanville skater to record multiple shots in the game. Miller was also the team's leader on the faceoffs with 12 wins, while Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) won 11 of her 12 draws.

Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) made the start in net, making 26 saves across two periods of work. She was spelled by Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug High School) for the third period, who made 13 stops of her own while allowing just one goal.
