Early Scoring Leads Women's Hockey to Win In Return to Ice

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Three first period goals paved the path to victory for the Manhattanville College women's hockey team, picking up a 4-1 victory at Wilkes on Friday evening to begin 2022. The Valiants improve to 8-4-1 on the season and are now 8-1-0 in UCHC play.

The Valiants had four different skaters light the lamp in the contest, with three goals coming in the opening 16 minutes that put the visiting team in the driver's seat. When all was said and done, seven Valiants ended the night with a point.

Just over two minutes after the opening puck drop, Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary) finished a feed from Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) to put Manhattanville up 1-0 early. It was the first collegiate goal for the sophomore forward, while Carr notched her sixth assist of the season. Six minutes later, Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) struck with her third goal of the season with an unassisted score.

Fjolla Berisha (Mahopac, N.Y./Brewster Lady Bulldogs (NEGHL)) rounded out the first period scoring 16 minutes in, burying a setup from Tia Martingetti and Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) on the power play to sport the Valiants a 3-0 lead before heading back into the locker room.

The host Wilkes came out with adjustments following the first, getting a goal back 81 seconds into the period off a shot from Emma Guzdek. That would be all the Colonels would get, however, as Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug High School) stopped the last ten shots she faced on the night. The first year netminder made 13 total saves to pick up her second win of the season.

Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) added a shorthanded insurance goal for the Valiants at the 10 minute mark of the second, her seventh of the season. While neither team would find the back of the net in the third, the Valiants fired 15 shots in the final period, recording a season-high 56 shots total on the night.

The Valiants went 33-25 in faceoffs in the contest, led by 12 draw wins by Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Miller. Manhattanville was 1-for-3 on the power play with nine shots, while successfully killing off both Wilkes' advantages and adding the shorthanded tally.
