PITTSTON, Pa. – Squaring off for a second time in as many days, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team completed the two-game sweep of King's College on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Monarchs 3-1. The victory moves the Valiants to 2-0 in bother their overall and conference record.
After a nine-goal offensive outburst to open up the season, the Crimson and White offense was slowed down just a tad but didn't lose a step. Manhattanville had three different scorers each pick up their first tallies of the season.
Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) got the Valiants on the board in the first, while
Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) picked up the game-winner in the third while
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) added an insurance goal later in the period.
For a second-straight day, the Valiants lit the lamp in the first three minutes after puck drop. Martignetti finished a feed from Genest to put the visitors up 1-0 just 2:22 into the contest. The lead would hold there for the remainder of the period, as Manhattanville found themselves shorthanded and killing three penalties in the opening 20.
The Monarchs made Manhattanville pay for the penalties, as King's evened the game back up eight minutes into the second on a power play goal from Jordan Dittmar. The score would hold there for the remainder of the period, setting up an exciting final frame.
After getting bit by the player advantage, the Valiants would use their power play opportunities in the third to regain the lead and close out the game. The Monarchs took a pair of penalties in quick success to open up the third, and while King's was able to successfully kill Kait Wolf's interference penalty, the Valiants kept the pressure up on the five-on-four as Genest picked up her second point of the day with an unassisted power play goal. With time winding down and the Monarchs desperate to find the tying score, Emma Dos Santos got sent to the sin bin for tripping with 31 seconds left in the game. Manhattanville wasted no time capitalizing, winning the faceoff and setting up Carr for the score off assists from
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) and
Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Washington Wild (PNAHA)) to head on home with the pair of wins.
