PITTSTON, Pa. – Making their season debut on the ice, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team started the new campaign off with a win, defeating King's College 9-0 on the road. The Valiants begin both the season and UCHC play with a 1-0 mark.
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) wasted no time getting her season started, scoring four goals and an assist to earn her first Manhattanville hat trick.
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) made her Valiant debut with a four point night, scoring a pair of goals and recording two assists in the win.
Hannah Beckman (North Plainfield, N.J./Rice Memorial Prep (Vt.)) scored twice, while
Fjolla Berisha (Mahopac, N.Y./Brewster Lady Bulldogs (NEGHL)) also had a tally to account for all of the Manhattanville offense.
Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy),
Maddy Davies (Valley City, N.D./Northern Cyclones (EWHC)),
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School), and
Ana Tittmann (Salisbury, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) each collected points with assists.
Miller got the Valiants going with her first goal three minutes into the contest on an unassisted shorthanded goal. Despite the early tally and a power play opportunity later in the period, the Valiants' lead held at 1-0 through the first 20 minutes.
It was the second period where the Manhattanville offense began to fire on all cylinders. A 19-shot period resulted in four goals for the visiting squad, fully taking over the contest. Eight minutes in, Berisha recorded her first of the season courtesy of assist from Cox and Miller. Four minutes later, Miller would strike again with her second shorthanded goal of the night. The Vals would score twice more in the following three minutes, as Cox would collect her first from a pass by Felicio and Beckman would finish a Davies pass to build the Manhattanville lead to 5-0.
The Vals kept the foot on the pedal in the third, netting another four tallies. Miller completed the hat trick three minutes into the period off a pass from Meredith before Beckman netted her second three minutes later off assists from Carr and Tittman. Cox joined the multigoal club just under nine minutes into the period off a feed from Felicio. To cap off her phenomenal debut to the season, Miller pulled a third shorthanded goal out of her bag of tricks to cap off the night for the Valiants.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) earned the win in net, stopping all 17 shots she faced. The Valiants went 33-14 in the faceoff circle, with
Annie Niedermier (Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) winning 12 draws to lead the way.
