Baseball holds off Farmingdale State to split twinbill

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team lost 11-3 in the Skyline Conference opener before taking the non-conference finale 7-4 Sunday afternoon to split the doubleheader with the Farmingdale State College Rams (3-1, 3-0 Skyline) from Manhattanville College Baseball Field in Purchase, New York. The Valiants (3-5, 2-4 Skyline) are now 11-10 all-time against the Rams dating back to the 2000 season.

Key Moments
  • In the first inning, Farmingdale State built a five-run lead off Valiant starter TJ Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), highlighted by Chris Discroll's two-RBI single that scored Ryan DePalma for the game-winning run.
  • Manhattanville cracked the scoring column in the fourth inning with three runs scored. In a one-out bases loaded situation, Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned a walk to put the Valiants on the board. A batter later, Matt Lynch's (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) sacrifice fly out pushed Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) across the plate to make it a 5-2 game. Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with an RBI-single to score Brian McBride (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and make it a 5-3 game. 
  • The Rams put together a trio of two-run scored innings in the sixth, eighth and ninth to settle the 11-3 final.

  • In the bottom half of the sixth, Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored the game winning run off Tommy Iazzetta's (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) two-RBI double to right field, 6-4. Iazzetta touched home plate off a Matthew Careccia (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) single on Rams reliever Ian Mourelatos to settle the 7-4 final.
