Brescia spins gem to lead Baseball in Skyline split with Maritime

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team dropped a 11-3 decision in the opener before claiming the 12-8 win in the rubber match Saturday afternoon against the Maritime College Privateers (3-3, 3-2 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action from Manhattanville College Baseball Field. The split moves the Valiants to a 5-6 overall record and a 4-5 mark in conference play.

  • In the second inning, Phil Russo slapped a double to center field off Valiant starter Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) to score Eric Wenig for Maritime's early 1-0 lead. Manhattanville knotted the game in the bottom frame as Johnny Mariano's (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) sacrifice fly out pushed across Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach).
  • The Valiants added two runs in the third courtesy of Tyler Mandel's (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) RBI-single and Anthony Quatrochi's (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) RBI-double to score Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), respectively, to claim the 3-1 lead.
  • Russo responded for the Privateers in the fourth by launching a two-run homer over the right field fence to make it a three-all game.
  • In the fifth frame, Russo earned a bases-loaded walk off Valiant reliever Ryan Powers (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) to advance Matt Eng 90 feet and score the game-winning run, 4-3.
  • The Privateers blew the game open with a seven-run sixth that would settle the 11-3 final.
  • In his first start on the mound this season, Viscusi fired a game-high six strikeouts, allowed seven hits, four earned runs and two walks in four innings of work.

Key Moments
  • Manhattanville broke the game two scoring in the opening inning as the team put together four runs off Privateer starter Nic Schepens. 
  • Maritime answered quickly with a single run in the second inning on Valiant starter Sean Demo (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep). The Valiants then added three insurance runs in the bottom half to make it a 7-1 game.
  • The Privateers battled to trim the deficit by putting together a four-run third inning to pull within two runs, 7-5. In response, Manhattanville added two insurance runs in the home half of the third, highlighted by a Parisi single through the left side for Quatrochi to score teh game winning run, 9-5. 
  • With the scoreboard showing 10-5 through six innings of play, Quatrochi launched a leadoff solo shot over the left field fence in the seventh to extend the Valiants lead to six runs.
  • Trailing 12-7 entering the ninth, J. Lee was able to score off a fielding error by center fielder before Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) fanned Jonathan Racanello to settle the 12-8 final.
  • TJ Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) fired a career-high 11 strikeouts and scattered a seventh-inning single to Vasilios Vafakos en route to earning his first win of the season.
