PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's softball team scored a combined 36 runs in two wins against the Purchase College Panthers (0-12, Skyline 0-10), Saturday, April 10. With the two wins, the Valiants improved their overall record to 5-2 and Skyline Conference record to 3-2.
Game 1: Manhattanville 20, Purchase 0
The Valiants took control early in the first game. They took a commanding 9-0 lead after just one inning of play. Sophomore infielder
Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey) and sophomore catcher
Abby Tanuma (Chula Vista, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) each hit home runs to start the inning and give Manhattanville a quick 4-0 advantage. A hit from senior outfielder
Isela Casillas (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) brought in two more runs and the Valiants were able to tally three more before the end of the inning to bring their total to nine.
Manhattanville never looked back after the first inning and scored five runs in the second, two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to bring their total to 20. Casillas had an outstanding day going 4-for-5 with seven RBI and graduate infielder
Jaclyn DeLuca (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart (H.S.)) had a day also going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Game 2: Manhattanville 16, Purchase 0
The second game of the day saw more dominance from Manhattanville. The Valiants started the game with another big first inning, taking an 8-0 lead after one inning played. Once again, the Crimson and White started the game with two home runs. Torres and DeLuca each hit two-run homers to give their team an early 4-0 lead. The Valiants then scored two runs off an error, Torres doubled to bring in another two runs and their total after one was eight.
Manhattanville then scored four runs in the third and another four runs in the fourth to bring their run total to 16. Leading the way for the Valiants in the second game was Torres who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore outfielder
Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) also had an excellent game going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
The Crimson and White will return to action next weekend on Saturday, April 17. The team will travel to St. Joseph's College-Long Island for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Eagles. The games are scheduled for 12:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M.
