Baseball sweeps Yeshiva in Skyline twinbill

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team captured convincing 12-1 and 13-1 victories Friday over the visiting Yeshiva University Maccabees (0-6, 0-6 Skyline) from Manhattanville College Baseball Field in Purchase, New York. With the sweep, the Valiants now move .500 winning percentage (7-7, 6-6 Skyline) in both season and conference play.

  • Jack Matero (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) opened the first inning with a single through the right side before scoring the game's initial run off a fielder's choice by Maccabee second baseman Judah Blonder. Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) doubled the Valiants' advantage by scoring the game-winning run off Tyler Mandel's (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) sacrifice flyout, 2-0.
  • Trailing 3-0 heading into the third inning, Yeshiva entered scoring column after Ari Rosenberg scored off a fielding error by shortstop Lynch to trim the deficit to two runs, 3-1.
    Manhattanville erupted for seven runs in the home half of the third highlighted by Mandel's two-RBI double that extended the lead to nine, 10-1.
  • The Valiants tacked on two additional runs in the sixth to settle the 12-1 final.
  • Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scattered three hits, allowed one run scored and fired a career-best 11 strikeouts (four walks) in five innings of work to earn his third win of the season. Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) (three strikeouts) and Rob McGuinness (New Hyde Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (one hit, one walk, one strikeout) came in and pitched one inning in relief for the Valiants.

  • Manhattanville broke the scoring ice in the third inning as Matero's RBI single plated Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) home for the early 1-0 lead. Matero then scored the game-winning run off Lynch's double to right field and give the Valiants the 2-0 advantage. The Valiants tacked on an another run in the frame to claim the 3-0 lead.
  • The Valiants put together four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to extend their lead to 13.
  • Yeshiva broke through in the seventh on Valiant reliever Ian Murray (Commack, N.Y./Commack). A RBI single courtsey of David Kreisberg advance Rosenberg 90 feet to score the Maccabees' lone run of the game. Murray then responded with back-to-back strikeouts to settle the 13-1 final.
  • In his third start of the season, TJ Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) fired a game-high seven strikeouts (two walks) and scattered four hits in three innings while Sean Demo (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) claimed his first win of the season after allowing one hit and retired four batters (two walks) in three innings of relief work.
