THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team lost its season opener against Skyline opponent Maritime College, Tuesday, April 6. The 15-8 loss came on the road and freshman attacker
Mike Walsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) led all Valiants (0-1) with three goals and two assists.
The game was back-and-forth to start. Manhattanville took the early lead thanks to a goal from senior midfielder
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central). The two teams traded goals and the game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. The teams once again traded goals to start the second quarter of play. Walsh and McGrath each scored and five minutes into the second the game was tied 4-4. The Privateers (3-0) then went on a 3-1 run and ended the first half with a 7-5 lead.
Maritime took control of the game in the third quarter. They went on a 6-1 run to take a 13-6 lead at the end of the quarter. The lone third quarter goal came from Walsh, his third of the game. Scoring slowed in the fourth quarter and each team scored twice. The goals came from freshman midfielder
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and junior attacker
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). That brought the score to 15-8 at the final whistle.
The team returns to action against the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Friday, April 9. Faceoff for the team's home opener is set for 7:00 P.M. at GoValiants.com Field.
