Keenan’s hat trick carries Women’s Lacrosse in season opener against Maritime

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team opened its abbreviated 2021 season Tuesday evening with a 14-11 setback against the Maritime College Privateers (2-0, 2-0 Skyline) from GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, New York.

Highlights
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) broke the scoring ice 54 seconds in for Manhattanville's 1-0 lead. Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) capitalized on a woman-up situation to double the Valiants' lead at the 26:23 mark. Jillson Neuwirth sliced Maritime's deficit in half by beating Valiant goalie Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) 32 seconds later. Melissa O'Mara (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) slipped one past Privateer goalie Elizabeth Pomaro 24 later to claim the 3-1 lead. Sarah Malone buried a feed from Anya Josberger at 20:21 for Maritime to knot the game at three. Manhattanville and Maritime traded leads over the next 9:02 before the Privateers scored three-straight goals to take the lead for good (8-6). Laura Keenan scored her second goal of the game with eight seconds left on the first-half clock to send the 8-7 game into the break.

Maritime opened the second-half scoring by putting away four-unanswered goals over a span of 16:59, including the game-winning goal courtesy of Nicole Johnson, for the 12-7 advantage. The Valiants pulled within two after Caity Bianchi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) put away one with 9:38 remaining. The Privateers tacked on two more goals to extend its lead to four, 14-10, before Keenan rattled the back of the cage at 5:02 for her first hat-trick on the season and settle the 14-11 final.

Opening draw is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.
