Women's Lacrosse falls to USMMA in Road Matchup

KING'S POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team lost to Skyline opponent the United States Merchant Marine Academy on the road, Friday, April 9. Sophomore attacker Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) led the team with five goals in the 12-10 loss.
 
The Mariners (1-2) took an early lead to start the game. They took a 4-1 advantage midway through the first half of play. The Valiants (0-2) responded with two goals off free position shots from D'Angelo and junior defender Caity Bianchi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) to cut the lead to 4-3. The two teams then traded goals before Merchant Marine pulled away at the end of the half and went into the break with a 7-4 advantage.
 
Merchant Marine carried their momentum into the second half, scoring twice in the first minute and a half to take a 9-4 lead. Manhattanville then went on a run of their own and scored three straight goals. Senior midfielder Hailey DeStasio (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead), senior midfielder Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) and D'Angelo each contributed a goal on the run to cut the lead to 9-7. The Valiants were unable to cut the lead to any less than two for the rest of the game as the Mariners added two goals of their own and then both teams went back and forth before the game finally ended with a final score of 12-10.
 
D'Angelo scored her five goals on just six shots and sophomore midfielder Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) finished the game with two goals and led the team in draw controls with six. Manhattanville had 20 shots on goal to Merchant Marine's 19 and led the free position shot bottle 15-7.
 
The Valiants return to action Monday, April 12, in a road matchup against Purchase College starting at 5:00 P.M.
