Softball takes two from Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team scored a combined 39 runs to sweep the Purchase College Panthers (0-10, 0-8 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon from Purchase College Softball Field. The Valiants move to 3-2 overall record and 3-2 in conference play.

Key Moments
  • Manhattanville opened the scoring in the second inning courtesy of Julia Bucci's (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) two-RBI single up the middle to score Jaclyn DeLuca (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart (H.S.)), which proved to be the game-winning run, and Giovanna Liggett (Fountain Valley, Calif./Edison) for the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Valiants blew the game open in the third inning by putting together an eight-runs scored on seven hits. The frame was highlighted by Bucci two-RBI triple to right field and then scoring off Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey) single to make it 10-0 game.
  • Manhattanville tacked on a single run in the fourth and six more in the fifth to settle the 17-0 run-rule final.
  • Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) had a dominating performance in the circle firing a game-high 12 strikeouts to capture her first complete-game shutout of the season. Shinstine allowed Purchase lone hit in the opening inning to Alexandria Perez who slapped a leadoff single to through the right side.

Key Moments
  • In her first collegiate start, Kylie Pester (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark) shined in the circle by tossing a five-inning perfect game to become the seventh Valiant in program history to achieve perfection. Pester fired 10 strikeouts and claimed the first perfecto overall since Alycia Feeney '19 beat Neumann University 9-0 in five innings on May 13, 2016.
  • After a scoreless opening inning, Liggett scored the game-winning run off a Amaya Esparza  (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills)double after reaching base off a one-out single. Manhattanville added six more runs in the frame to take the 7-0 advantage.
  • In the third inning and facing the second pitch of her at-bat, Esparza launched her first-career home run over the center field fence for the Valiants' 8-0 lead. Torres scored the team's ninth run as she reached base off a triple and advanced 90 feet off shortstop Brianna Palermo error.
  • The Valiants scored nine and four runs in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively, to settle the 22-0 run-rule final.
