Baseball battles Mount Saint Mary in home finale

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team dropped a 4-3 non-conference decision in 11 innings in the home finale against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (11-10). The Valiants move to a 11-10 overall record on the season.

Key Moments
  • After a scoreless two innings, Manhattanville broke through in the home half of the third with a single run on Knight starter Robert Brust. Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) slapped a single to center field, stole second base and then scored the game's initial run off Anthony Pressimone's (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) RBI single.
  • The sixth inning was highlighted by Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) as he cracked a one-out double on Knight reliever Michael DiGiovanni to push across Pressimone and Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) for the Valiants to claim the 3-1 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary entered the scoring column in the seventh courtesy of DiGiovanni run-scoring single off Valiant starter Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk). The Knights ended Shaffer's outing in the eighth after a Cullen Roper RBI-single scored Dominick Marzigliano to pull within one run, 3-2. Mount Saint Mary made it a 3-all game as Ben Crowley scored off a passed ball.
  • Starting from the bottom frame of the eighth, Knights reliever Christopher Snyder and Valiants reliever Rob McGuinness (New Hyde Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) squared off in a pitcher's duel where neither team was able to edge the other heading into extras.
  • In the 11th inning with runners sitting on the corners, Michael Paolo took a chance in stealing second while Coleman Barnes was able to score the game-winning run on Pressimone's throw. The Valiants were unable to cash in on a bases-loaded situation where Snyder induced Pressimone to a flyout for the final out and settle the 4-3 final.
  • Luke Shaffer (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scattered eight hits, allowed two earned runs, three walks and fired a game-high six strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work in his home finale. In 2.1 innings of relief, McGuinness surrendered three hits, one run and retired four batters (one walk) in his final day on the home mound.
