Manhattanville Field Hockey Drops Pair of Contests at William Smith Classic

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team competed at the 2021 William Smith Field Hockey Classic over the weekend. The Valiants dropped a 4-2 contest to the host William Smith Colleges on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend with a 5-3 defeat to St. Lawrence University. With the losses, Manhattanville drops to 0-5 this season.

Game One Recap: Manhattanvile 2, William Smith 5 (Saturday)
Following a scoreless opening quarter, Manhattanvile struck first courtesy of Charlotte Stanwood's (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary) second goal of the season five minutes into the second quarter. The Herons would respond in short order, netting a pair of goals of their own before the end of the half.

The Valiants would knot the game back up at 2-2 in the fourth of a Kate Buckley (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) tally, beating the Heron goalkeeper to the left side. However, the fourth quarter ultimately played out similarly to the second, as William Smith scored twice in the final ten minutes of regulation to win the contest. Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) played a full 60 minutes in the cage, making a season-high nine saves.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 3, St. Lawrence 5 (Sunday)
Manhattanville was able to open up Sunday's affair on the right foot, scoring a pair of first period goals. Raquel Brown (Claymont, Del./Brandywine) opened up the scoring with her first of the season at the six minute mark, while Stanwood would add her third of the year seven minutes later. The Saints pulled within one off a Ciara Halloran shot, but Buckley was able to regain the two goal advantage for the Valiants after dribbling her way through multiple defenders. St. Lawrence would add another goal of their own before the half wrapped up, giving the Valiants a slim 3-2 lead.

Despite the offensive success in the first half, Mahnattanville would be held to just three shots in the final 30 minutes, unable to find the back of the cage. St. Lawrence, meanwhile, score twice in the third and netted an insurance tally in the fourth to earn the win to close out the weekend.

Up Next
The Valiants look to secure their first win of the season when they travel to Hartwick on Saturday for a 1 p.m. draw.
