Fernandez' Overtime Winner Lifts Manhattanville Men's Soccer to First Win of Season

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Picking up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, the Manhattanville College men's soccer team defeated Drew University 3-2 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Valiants' record on the season to 1-3-1 on the season.

Lucas Fernandez (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) played the role of hero on Saturday, scoring three minutes into the first overtime period to earn the victory. The junior received a pass from Kendall Davis (Atlanta, Georgia/Immaculata) on the left side of the Drew goal and found himself all alone to fire the game-winner into the net.

Manhattanville was able to successfully overcome a pair of one-goal deficits during the match. Drew opened up the scoring in the 12th minute on a Christian Tyson tally, the only score of the first half. The Valiants would score the equalizer courtesy of Davis, with his second goal of the campaign coming in the 61st minute.

The score would remain even at 1-1 until the closing five minutes of regulation, where the Rangers took their second lead of the afternoon off a goal from Kevin Kiernan. With the clock working against them, the Valiants were able to draw a yellow card with just over four minutes remaining on Eli Pardo's (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) shot attempt. The junior forward was awarded a penalty kick and did not let the opportunity go to waste, placing the shot in the upper left corner of the net to tie up the match and set the stage for Fernandez' overtime winner.

Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) earned his second consecutive start in net coming off his strong performance against Amherst earlier in the week. The sophomore made seven saves in the win, including six in the second half.
