PURCHASE, N.Y. – Making their return to action for the first time since 2019, the Manhattanville College field hockey team dropped their season-opening contest to Western Connecticut State University on Thursday night by a final of 3-2.
The Valiants would open up the scoring on the night in the second quarter, as
Kate Buckley (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) fired home a shot that would be the only tally through the opening 30 minutes.
Following halftime, WestConn would even the score just under five minutes in off a goal by Sophie Leeds. Mia Schumey then buried a feed courtesy of Samantha Burns to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Manhattanville was able to find the equalizer just under two minutes later, as
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) finished off a pass from
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) to knot the score even, 2-2.
Manhattanville was able to limit WestConn to a single shot in the 4
th, but it proved to be a costly one, as Schumey came up once again late in the quarter to register the deciding score. The Valiants recorded 10 shots of their own in the closing period, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) got the start in the cage for Manhattanville, posting a scoreless first half while recording two saves.
Abbey Playle (San Jose, CA/Leigh High School) led the Valiant attack with six shots.
