NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team earned their first victory of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Albertus Magnus College in an offensive display, 5-4. With the win, the Valiants improve to 1-1 early in the 2021 campaign.
After being held scoreless in the season opener on Saturday, the Valiant attack erupted for 20 shots, 14 of which went on target. The constant flurry of shots resulted in five different goal scorers finding the back of the net to lead Manhattanville to victory. In a back-and-forth affair, it would be
Veronica Lage (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) that played the role of hero on the night, as the sophomore was able to bury a feed from
Ashley Hayes (Springfield, Ore./Thurston) in the 83
rd minute in what was ultimately the game-deciding tally.
Scoring opened up just over five minutes into the match, as
Kelly Barrera (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester High School) was able to provide the Valiants an early 1-0 lead. Hayes would tack on to the Manhattanville advantage with a goal of her own in the 12
th minute. The Falcons, however, would draw even before the half off scores from Katherine Raposo and Keegan Riccio.
The offense continued to control the game in the second half, with Manhattanville reclaiming a two goal lead courtesy of back-to-back scores from
Jennifer Xiong (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) and
Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy). Albertus Magnus would cut the deficit back down to one, but Lage's goal at 83:44 gave the Valiants just enough breathing room. The Falcons would continue to fight, with Emmalee Ianniello scoring with just under three minutes remaining to move the score to 5-4, but the Valiants were able to close out the remaining time in regulation to secure the win.
Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made three saves in net for the Valiants to earn her first win of the year.
